Scope
This standard ensures that the City's official website/s are developed from a user-friendly, user-driven perspective.
Standard
Images saved in the .gif format should use the 216-color web palette, minimized to use the least number of colors.

Images saved in the .jpeg format should be compressed 60% to 70% --or as much as possible-- depending on how the final image is affected.

As a rule of thumb, images in landscape mode (horizontal), should be no larger than 210 pixels in width and in portrait mode (vertical), should be no larger than 210 pixels high. No graphic image may be wider than 730 pixels.

All images should have a vertical spacing of between 5 and 10 pixels (Full-width images have no horizontal spacing since no text will be on either side).

Images should have no borders.

No treatments (drop-shadow, etc.) should be applied to photographs. Additionally, all photographs should be rectangular in shape.

All images must have alternative text, per Level 1 Accessibility Policy.

Animated gifs and clip art should be used sparingly.

Designers should be careful to not exceed the City's Fast Loading Pages Standard (total page size should not exceed 100K).
Rationale
This standard ensures consistency and fast-loading pages.
