Scope
Each Department must ensure that all its personal computers that connect to the City's networks have access to and apply current, critical Microsoft Windows updates.
Procedure
SAVE ALL YOUR WORK BEFORE YOUR SCHEDULED UPDATE TIME. Sometimes, the PC will restart/reboot after the critical updates are applied. Work not saved will be lost.

All supported Windows operating systems:
  • A manual update is required prior to configuring for automatic updates. Follow the procedure for "Windows 98" and repeat until the "scan for updates" indicates that there are no more critical updates to apply.

Windows XP:
  • Start / Control Panel / System / Automatic Updates: check "keep my computer up to date" and "automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify;" select "every day" and a time at which the PC will reliably be powered on.

Windows 2000 (Service Pack 2 or higher must be installed):
  • Start / Settings / Control Panel / Automatic Updates: check "keep my computer up to date" and "automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify;" select "every day" and a time at which the PC will reliably be powered on.

Windows 98:
  • Start / Windows Update: follow the directions on the website to "scan for updates" and install all indicated critical updates.
Rationale
Limits the City's exposure to known vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows.
